Highlights for Children Magazine

Recommended Age: 6 - 12

Highlights magazine, launched in June 1946 by Garry Cleveland Myers, Ph.D., and Caroline Myers, is the most widely read consumer children's magazine with more than two million readers each month. The major intention of Highlights is to help kids grow to become thoughtful, literate, sensitive citizens.

"In this increasingly complex world, where so often kids seem hurried through childhood, a magazine like Highlights is more important than ever," said Christine French Clark, editor of Highlights. "We know the power of words and pictures to influence children, so we choose ours carefully, always keeping the best interests of our young readers top of mind."

Among the most popular features found in each issue of Highlights are:

Hidden Pictures The best-known feature of the magazine first appeared in the inaugural June 1946 issue. "Hidden Pictures" challenges readers to find small objects hidden within a larger picture.
Goofus and Gallant This feature has had kids and their families talking about desirable and undesirable behaviors since 1948. In "Goofus and Gallant," two young boys model good and bad behavior in situations that are familiar to kids and parents.
Ask Arizona "Ask Arizona," which first appeared in May 2005, is a story series featuring a girl named Arizona who writes an advice column for other children. The fictionalized letters around which the stories center describe common problems children face.
Gallant Kids Gallant Kids," a recent addition (2004) to Highlights, recognizes children doing good things for the world around them.
Science Highlights uses subjects such as animals, volcanoes, stars and planets, dinosaurs, inventions and technology, and more to show readers the fun and excitement of thinking like a scientist.2,5
