Literacy ends poverty. Reading is where it all begins. Join us.

Maryland Correctional Institution–Jessup (MCIJ)

Adult male ESL students come to MCI-J with low literacy in both their first and second languages. Magazines are popular with inmates because they have pictures, which ESL students can look at and respond to while engaged in second language learning (English); the captions under the pictures are usually short and easy to read; they contain entertaining and relevant topics which promote oral engagement and group problem-solving discussions; and the variety of topics enables all students to become engaged in reading for entertainment and education.

Our literacy goals include using print and text media to enhance academic and work situations upon release back to the community in addition to helping students attain their high school diplomas.
