Rocking the Boat

Rocking the Boat students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Our program empowers young people challenged by severe economic, educational, and social conditions to develop self-confidence, set ambitious goals, and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Literacy tops the list of academic skills students practice at Rocking the Boat. In an area where high school graduate rates hover at a dismal 35%, our goal is for all Rocking the Boat participants to complete high school and enroll in college.

Magazines are a medium Rocking the Boat already makes great use of in furthering our literacy goals. Our Program Directors incorporate technical publications in their lesson plans all the time, helping students see their work in a larger context. Our Social Workers frequently reference popular magazines in their group work, which is hugely valuable in demonstrating the relevance of discussion topics.
